2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. John Paul II finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year St. John Paul II finished eighth in Class 5A region eight with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Falcons have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Falcons have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as St. John Paul II averaged scoring just 9.9 points a game. The Falcons also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 44.2 points a game. The Falcons would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. St. John Paul II is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only five seasons. They have managed a record of 5-43 over the past five years. John Mumford leaves St. John Paul II after just one season to accept a position as an assistant coach at New Mexico State. He will become the defensive line coach. David Lloyd will lead the Falcons into the 2017 football season as their head coach. Lloyd was the head coach at Kestrel Heights in Durham NC from 2013-16. The St. John Paul II Falcons will play in Class 5A region eight during the 2017 season. The Falcons enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 12 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Falcons will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at St. John Paul II will be to simply win some games. The Falcons open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent West Morgan on Friday, August 25 at Rebels Stadium. Last year the West Morgan Rebels finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 3A region eight. The Rebels lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Sylvania by a score of 42-6. St. John Paul II and West Morgan have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Falcons have a 2-2-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2016 with West Morgan winning by a score of 50-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
